A little about the event:

On Nov. 9 at the NYS Fairgrounds, we will be holding the 6th Annual CNY Veterans Parade and Expo. The purpose of the event is “Thanking Our Veterans” of every generation and conflict.

The one and one-half hour long parade features more than 90 veterans and military organizations from throughout Central New York and beyond. The parade is based on the old-fashioned military style parades that featured military vehicles, local military units, Veterans of Foreign War Posts and American Legions. Every branch of the armed services and every conflict since WWII are represented. Veterans who participated have expressed gratification at seeing the crowds waving flags and clapping for them along the parade route at the State Fair grounds in Geddes.

The Expo, held in the Center of Progress building, features displays with a special emphasis on military history, local companies, and local organizations helping present military personnel or veterans. Last year, more than 50 organizations took part in the Expo. Organizations and individuals exhibit important artifacts from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, the Civil War, and the Vietnam War. Local groups offer ways to get involved, such as gathering goods to send to deployed troops. The VA and other organizations present information about services available to veterans of any age. There will once again be a presentation about TRI-Care for retirees. New this year will be a Kids' Area, Sponsored by TOPS, that will feature activities, games, displays and even face painting.

For the first time in our area, this year's Expo will include a display featuring President George Washington’s Inauguration Bible, which will be surrounded by a display created by the Onondaga Historical Society of local Revolutionary War artifacts. The Bible, brought here by the Masons of CNY, was also used at four other inaugurations: President Harding in 1921; President Eisenhower in 1953; President Jimmy Carter in 1977; and President George Bush Sr. in 1989.

Also, new this year is "Heroes under 30," an event sponsored in part by Clear Channel Radio. Nominated veterans under the age of thirty will be honored at this year’s event.

In keeping with this year's theme - "Honor and Hire" – the Stars and Stripes Job Fair is being held for the first time during the Expo. Veterans are a very special asset to our community. The best way to keep them here locally is to help them make connections in the community that will maximize their talents and employment skills.

For more information, contact Diana LaMattina Abdella, parade coordinator, at 428-9651 or cnyveteransparadeandexpo@yahoo.com.

******We are also looking for volunteers, to help with setup on Friday or to serve as marshals to help with parking and the parade on Saturday, if interested, please contact Diana.
